BBQ Eating Contest - Dickey's Barbecue Pit

Some have probably said you were crazy to eat barbecue once a week. Others might question why you need to smoke a whole pork butt when you're just making a weekday dinner. But you knew this day would come, and on Friday, you've got your chance to show off exactly how much pulled pork you can eat.

Dickey's Barbecue Pit (7284 W. 121st St.) is sponsoring a barbecue eating contest tomorrow — you have to stop by the restaurant today to sign up — at 1 p.m. On the line is a chance to represent Kansas City in a national eating contest next month.

The rules are straightforward. You've got six minutes to down as many pulled pork sandwiches as possible. The winner of the challenge in Overland Park earns a trip to Dallas to compete in the national contest at the original location still run by the Dickey family.

In Dallas, you'll compete against five other pulled pork champions on October 18 on the 70th anniversary for the chain that now has 172 locations in 39 states. Your fellow competitors will be culled from regional competitions at the Dickey's in Raleigh, North Carolina; San Antonio, Texas; Plano, Texas; Meridian, Idaho; and Pleasanton, California, over the next week. The competition isn't the only publicity stunt planned by
Dickey's — the barbecue joint is also planning on an attempt to build the world's tallest barbecue sandwich the same day. While I could find the world's largest barbecue sandwich, I believe that this is the first attempt at the tallest version.

If you don't win (or choose to compete), you can still celebrate on October 18. In honor of its anniversary, Dickey's will be dishing up $1 sandwiches and drinks until 3 p.m. that day.

  1. ¡I want to participate there because I love eating pork and I know that I'll eat pork sandwiches more than the others competitors because I'm like a pig.
